Starkey, Knight and Ford was a large regional brewery based in Devon, established at the end of the 19th century, which expanded by taking over smaller breweries and by the 1960s had about 400 public houses, eventually being acquired by Whitbread & Co Ltd in 1962. While the brewery was not specifically located in Barnstaple, the company's significant presence in the surrounding areas meant its pubs were likely to be found in places like Barnstaple. The brand eventually ceased to exist after its acquisition, with Whitbread closing its breweries and integrating the remaining pubs into their own empire.
