Antique French Blédine Tin by Jacquemaire – Early 20th Century Infant Food Advertising Canister – “La Seconde Maman”

.

A beautifully evocative early 20th-century French advertising tin for Blédine, produced by Jacquemaire, and one of those objects that tells its story the moment you look at it.

.

Blédine was a specially prepared cereal flour developed for infants and young children, marketed as a modern, nourishing alternative to traditional feeding. The poignant slogan “Blédine – la seconde maman” (“the second mother”) speaks volumes about early ideas of care, trust, and the growing role of science in domestic life.

.

The tin is decorated with a tender illustration of a mother and child, rendered in soft, reassuring tones typical of Belle Époque and WWI-era French advertising. Alongside the imagery are period details including the regulated price (Prix réglementé: 7 fr. 75) and an original French tax/revenue stamp, placing this piece firmly in the circa 1910–1925 period.

.

Why we love it

This is not a pristine object — and that’s exactly its charm. The surface wear, fading, oxidation, and losses to the original wrap speak to real domestic use and a century of quiet survival. It feels honest, human, and deeply atmospheric.
