Oakey's Wellington Knife Polish was introduced in 1858 by John Oakey & Sons, an English company that made sandpaper and polishing materials. The polish was a huge success and was advertised on buses and trams for many years.

History of Oakey's Knife Polish

John Oakey, an English inventor, founded the company in 1833.

Oakey learned to make sandpaper while working as an apprentice to a piano maker.

He developed a mass-production process and moved his business to Wellington Mill in Westminster Bridge Road.

The company also produced black lead, Silversmith's Soap, Plate Powder, and furniture polishes.

The company's Wellington Works were named after the Duke of Wellington Trade Mark.

The company's sons, Joseph and John, took the company public in 1893.

Advertisements for Oakey's Knife Polish were common on buses and trams in the early twentieth century.

"Wellington" Knife polish is part of the National History Museum Wales, St Fagans collection.

TRUSTPILOT reviews objet dart stuff

July 2025

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
