The Redruth Brewery's history spans from the 18th century, with the original site established in 1742 and a new location founded in 1792, eventually becoming Cornish Brewery Co. Ltd. before its acquisition by Devenish in 1934. The brewery was sold off in 1991 but continued to brew its own brands, finally closing in 2004 after going into liquidation. The site was later regenerated as Kresen Kernow, an archive center for Cornwall, and a microbrewery.
Early History and Expansion
1742: The original Redruth Brewery was founded at Sparnon Gate, eventually moving to its later, more extensive site in 1792.
19th Century: By the mid-1800s, the brewery had grown to include malt houses, an engine house, a carpenter's shop, and an aerated water factory.
Acquisition by Devenish
1934: The brewery was acquired by Devenish & Co. Ltd. and became the Devenish Redruth Brewery.
Post-Acquisition Operations
1991: Devenish, now focusing on pubs, sold the brewery in a management buyout, and it resumed brewing under new management.
Late 1990s: The brewery restarted brewing its own brands in 1998 after a period of contract brewing.
2002: Brewing operations were temporarily suspended in early 2002 but restarted later that year.
Closure and Legacy
2004: The brewery went into liquidation and closed its doors in March.
Post-2004: The site became derelict, suffering from vandalism and fires.
2014: A major regeneration project began, aiming to transform the site into an area of public spaces, houses, and workshops.
2019: The site was officially redeveloped into Kresen Kernow, Cornwall's archive center, which now houses manuscripts and documents detailing the region's history. A microbrewery was also established on the site to revive the historic brands.
