Antique Painted Horse Hame / Harness Hame with Chain – Rustic Stable Display
Antique Painted Horse Hame / Harness Hame with Chain – Rustic Stable Display Piece
A wonderfully characterful antique horse hame, retaining its striking worn red paintwork, aged metal fittings and original hanging chain. This is a beautiful piece of rural working history, once forming part of a draught horse harness. Hames were fitted around a horse’s collar and helped distribute the pulling force when working with carts, ploughs or heavy agricultural equipment.
This example has a strong curved wooden form with metal reinforcement plates, ring fittings, hook ends and a heavy chain attached. The red paint has worn back beautifully with age, revealing layers of timber and earlier surface beneath. The heavy patina, oxidised metalwork and rubbed paint give it a fabulous decorative look — ideal for a country house, stable conversion, pub interior, farmhouse kitchen, equestrian display or rustic wall feature.
The piece appears to be late 19th to early 20th century, most likely British or European agricultural/equestrian harness equipment. There is no visible maker’s mark, which is quite typical for working horse harness fittings of this kind, as many were produced by local blacksmiths, wheelwrights, saddlers or regional agricultural suppliers rather than branded manufacturers.
Maker / Historical Interest
Before tractors became commonplace, horses were essential to rural life, transport and farming. Hames like this were practical working tools, usually made from shaped hardwood with iron or steel fittings. Many were made or repaired locally by blacksmiths and harness makers, which is why individual examples often vary slightly in shape, hardware and finish.
Painted examples are especially decorative today, as the worn colour gives them real folk-art appeal. This red-painted hame has the sort of honest wear that suggests long use rather than later decorative distressing.
Condition
In antique, used condition with heavy age-related wear, paint loss, surface marks, knocks, rusting, oxidisation and patina throughout. The chain and metal fittings show corrosion and age. There may be old repairs, losses or replaced elements, consistent with a working agricultural item. It is sold as a decorative antique display piece rather than for equestrian use.
