Maker’s History – Chad Valley

Chad Valley was one of Britain’s most celebrated toy manufacturers, founded in the late 19th century in Birmingham. The company became nationally recognised for producing well-made dolls, games and children’s playthings — and by the mid-20th century Chad Valley was a household name across the UK.

.

Their reputation grew particularly strongly through department store toy ranges and licensed products, and they produced a wide variety of domestic roleplay toys like this one — allowing children to imitate adult life in miniature (and in the most charming, old-fashioned way).

.

By the 1970s Chad Valley produced many popular licensed toys, and this piece is a lovely example of that era — combining British toy heritage with the hugely popular Holly Hobbie imagery licensed via American Greetings Corporation.
