Vintage Boots Clinical Thermometer in Original Box – Boots the Chemists
Vintage Boots Clinical Thermometer in Original Box – Boots the Chemists Social History Collectable
A wonderfully nostalgic piece of British chemist-shop history, this vintage Boots clinical thermometer captures a time when almost every family medicine cupboard held one of these slim glass thermometers, carefully stored in its metal tube and cardboard box.
Sold by Boots the Chemists, this “English Make” clinical thermometer comes with its original Boots box, metal protective case and printed directions for use. The box carries the classic wording “Sold at all branches of Boots the Chemists”, a lovely reminder of Boots’ long-standing place on the British high street — not just as a shop, but as part of everyday family life, home nursing and practical domestic care.
Before digital thermometers, plastic blister packs and instant readings, instruments like this were kept in bathroom cabinets, bedside drawers and first-aid boxes across the country. They speak quietly of mid-century home life: the careful shake of the thermometer, the folded instruction paper, the family chemist, and the reassuring reliability associated with Boots.
The original paper instructions are particularly evocative, with old-fashioned wording and medical advice from another age. The leaflet refers to “quicksilver”, so this item is offered as a historic thermometer and is sold strictly as a collector’s display item only.
The thermometer, metal case, box and leaflet are all present, making this a charming and displayable addition to a collection of vintage medical items, chemist shop memorabilia, Boots collectables, apothecary pieces or social history objects.
Condition
In good vintage condition overall, with age-related wear to the cardboard box, including rubbing, softening to the edges, marks and general signs of storage. The printed label remains attractive and readable, with lovely period typography. The leaflet shows creasing and age-toning, as expected. The metal protective tube is present and the glass thermometer appears intact from visual inspection, but it has not been tested or used.
Important safety note: This is a historic collector’s item and is not sold for medical use.
A small but wonderfully evocative survivor from the world of the old British chemist — practical, familiar, and full of quiet domestic nostalgia.
