Vintage early 20th century military Carr & co Carlisle free sample biscuit tin
Vintage early 20th century military Carr & co, Carlisle free sample biscuit tin. This incredibly rare tin was issued by renowned biscuit maker Carlisle & co. It is very unusual as most tins by this company are highly decorated ( we have several for sale). Obviously this one was to be used by the military. It needed to be very sturdy, simple and army colours ie green. We believe this is first world war, known as the Great War, but certainly no later than the second world war. Interestingly this has a the Paul Kettle collection label on base. From research he was a prolific collector of antiques that were sent to auction early 2020? Some age related wear.

Carr & Co. Ltd. was a biscuit manufacturer based in Carlisle, England. It was founded by Jonathan Dodgson Carr in 1831 and became known for producing items like the Table Water Biscuit. The company was later acquired by Pladis Global, and the brand is now marketed in the US by Kellogg's.
Carr's, as it's commonly known, was one of the largest baking businesses in Britain within 15 years of its founding. The Table Water Biscuit, a hard-wearing salty snack, was originally developed for expeditions and later refined into the product known today. The company's Victorian premises were located near Carlisle Castle. Vintage biscuit tins from Carr & Co. Ltd. are popular collectibles, with some featuring designs like the Royal Appointment seal and early 20th-century embossed patterns.
