Vintage Wooden Schweppes Drinks Crate with Deposit Markings
-
A wonderfully characterful original vintage wooden Schweppes drinks crate, rich with honest wear and industrial charm. This solid timber crate dates to the early–mid 20th century and retains its bold black stencilled lettering, including “Schweppes”, “CRATE” and the original “DEPOSIT 3/-” marking — a charming reminder of Britain’s pre-decimal currency system.
-
Designed for heavy commercial use, the crate features cut-out hand grips, dovetail-jointed corners, and a beautifully time-worn surface showing scuffs, knocks, darkened grain and patina earned through decades of service. The timber has mellowed to a warm, richly aged tone that simply cannot be replicated.
-
The side is stamped “Hardin & Sons Ltd, West Drayton, Middlesex”, anchoring this piece firmly in British manufacturing and distribution history.

A Brief History of Schweppes
Schweppes is one of the world’s oldest beverage brands, founded in 1783 by Johann Jacob Schweppe, a Swiss watchmaker who perfected a method of producing carbonated mineral water. His invention was revolutionary and quickly gained popularity for both its refreshment and perceived medicinal qualities.
-
By the 19th century, Schweppes had firmly established itself in Britain, becoming a supplier to the Royal Household and a household name synonymous with quality and innovation. As bottled soft drinks grew in popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, robust wooden crates like this one were essential to Schweppes’ nationwide distribution network.
-
The deposit system, clearly marked on this crate (3 shillings), ensured crates were returned, reused and circulated — making these utilitarian objects an integral part of everyday commercial life. Surviving examples are increasingly sought after for their authentic branding, typography, and industrial heritage.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
