Origins

Arthur Brooke, a tea dealer, opened his first shop in Manchester in 1869 selling tea, coffee, and sugar. Brooke Bond and Company was founded by Arthur Brooke and launched PG Tips in the 1930s. The brand was originally called "Pre-Gest Tea" and was marketed as a digestive tea.

Name

The name was shortened to "PG" by grocers and salesmen. "Tips" was added to refer to the fact that only the top two leaves and bud of each tea plant are used in the blend.

Innovations

PG Tips has been a pioneer in the tea category, including:

Teabag: Invented in 1960

Pyramid bag: Introduced in 1990

Biodegradable plant-based teabags: Transitioned to in 2018

Advertising
