Vintage Bromo Paper Box c.1935 Diamond Mills Paper Company NY
Overview:
Rare antique Bromo Paper box by Diamond Mills Paper Co., New York. 1878 Paris Exposition winner. Genuine American pre-war pharmacy advertising. c.1935.
Details:
A genuinely rare piece of pharmaceutical and advertising history: an original Bromo Paper box manufactured by the Diamond Mills Paper Company of New York City, dating to approximately 1935. Bromo was one of the world's earliest commercially packaged toilet papers and a celebrated medicated product of the Victorian and early twentieth-century pharmacy trade.
A Prize-Winning Victorian Innovation
First launched in the 1870s, Bromo Paper achieved international fame when it was awarded the highest prize at the 1878 Paris Exposition Universelle. Both faces of the winning medal are proudly reproduced on the front of this box — one bearing the laureate head of République Française (Marianne), the other the allegorical figure of the Paris awards.
Marketed as "A Perfectly Pure Article for the Water Closet," Bromo was sold exclusively through druggists and chemists. Each sheet was impregnated with Bromo Chloralum and carbolic acid, and was claimed to act as both a disinfectant and a preventive against "the Piles." Every sheet bore a distinctive "BROMO" watermark to deter the counterfeit versions that had appeared across the British Empire — particularly in India.
Dating This Box
The packaging copy declares Bromo has been "on the market for SIXTY YEARS," with an 1873 Copyright Office registration to G. W. Thompson printed along the bottom edge. This dates the box to circa 1935 — a genuine pre-war American original, manufactured at the original New York operation, and considerably scarcer than the later British-made Bromo packaging produced by Diamond Mills Paper Company Limited from the 1950s onwards.
Condition
In honest, well-aged condition consistent with age and original use:
Outer paper wrapper with tearing and loss to the upper edge
Light foxing, toning, and historic water staining across the wrapper
Inner cardboard box intact with original staples visible
All printed graphics and text remain clearly legible, including the Paris Exposition medallions, the full marketing copy, and the Diamond Mills Paper Company, New York attribution
A characterful, untouched survivor that displays beautifully.
Approximate Dimensions
Approx. 18cm x 14cm x 3cm (please refer to photographs as part of the description)
Why This Piece Matters
Comparable examples of Bromo Paper are held in the permanent collections of the Wellcome Library, the Science Museum Group, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Museum, and the Imperial War Museum, reflecting its significance to the history of pharmacy, public health, advertising, and everyday life. An original Diamond Mills New York example in any presentable condition is increasingly difficult to find.
