Antique J & J Colman Tin Casket Neoclassical Classical Revival Design, c.1920s
Antique J & J Colman Tin Casket – Neoclassical Classical Revival Design, c.1920s
-
Step back in time with this exquisite antique Colman’s tin, crafted in the style of a neoclassical casket and richly decorated with scenes inspired by ancient Greco-Roman mythology. Made by J. & J. Colman Ltd, the renowned British manufacturer best known for Colman's Mustard, this decorative tin dates to the early 20th century, likely the 1920s or early 1930s—a period when packaging was as ornamental as the contents were practical.
-
Exceptional Design & Detail
Every surface of this rectangular tin is adorned with finely embossed classical imagery:
The front and back panels depict elegantly draped figures reclining in romantic pastoral settings, reminiscent of ancient frescoes.
The sides feature musicians and muses, one strumming a harp, another playing a pipe, evoking the spirit of antiquity and the arts.
The deep jewel-tone colours—verdant green, royal blue, and rich bronze—are unusually vibrant for a piece of this age, enhanced with a faux-enamel finish that adds texture and lustre.
The domed lid is framed with ornate architectural fluting and acanthus leaf motifs, giving the piece a luxurious, almost sarcophagus-like appearance.
-
A Neoclassical Revival Treasure
This tin reflects the Neoclassical revival that was popular in the decorative arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Designed to resemble a grand keepsake box or miniature chest, it would have originally been used to store starch, flour, or other kitchen staples—but was clearly made to live on as a cherished keepsake box.
-
Colman’s Guarantee of Quality
Inside the lid, you’ll find the authentic J. & J. Colman Ltd. stamp, featuring their signature sheep logo and the proud slogan: "By Your Side in the Kitchen"—a delightful nod to their historic advertising campaigns. The inner panels also retain some of their original embossed decoration, adding depth and charm to the interior.
