Victorian Music Hall Sheet Music – The Doctor, Sung by Dan Leno (c.1890s) – Illustrated Cover, Framed

-

Step back into the glittering world of the late Victorian music hall with this wonderfully characterful framed sheet music cover titled The Doctor, sung by the celebrated comedian Dan Leno. With words by A. J. Morris and music by George Le Brunn, the piece was published in London by Charles Sheard & Co., 192 High Holborn, around 1890–1900.

-

Beautifully printed in colour lithograph, the cover caricatures Leno as a bearded doctor in a tall hat, leaning on his cane and proclaiming humorously:

-

> “If my medicines wear, my fees are strong, and though I say it myself, I may not have cured many, but I’ve killed thousands.”

-

The artwork captures the playful spirit of London’s music-hall era, when comic songs and eccentric characters filled theatres with laughter. Above the title appears the typical disclaimer:

-

> “This song may be sung in public anywhere without fee or licence, except at Music Halls or in Pantomimes,”

a delightful glimpse into Victorian performance rights.

-

Dan Leno (1860–1904) was one of Britain’s most beloved entertainers, famed for his comic monologues, pantomime roles, and quick wit. This piece exemplifies the wit and visual flair that made him a household name.
