Vintage Erik Hansen’s Halibut Liver Oil Capsules Tin – Timothy Whites & Taylors Chemist Tin c.1950s

A wonderfully atmospheric little piece of mid-century chemist history, this vintage Erik Hansen’s Halibut Liver Oil Capsules tin was originally sold through Timothy Whites & Taylors, one of Britain’s best-known high street dispensing chemist chains.

Compact and pocket-sized, the tin once held 50 halibut liver oil capsules, with the original printed lid still showing the dosage information and Vitamin A reference. The design has a lovely utilitarian pharmacy feel, with bold black lettering, muted olive-green and red colouring, and the Timothy Whites & Taylors name printed across the lower panel.

Halibut liver oil was widely promoted during the mid-20th century as a concentrated source of vitamins, particularly at a time when fish liver oils were a familiar part of everyday household health routines. The Timothy Whites & Taylors name dates the tin to after the 1935 merger of Timothy Whites with Taylors Drug Co., and before the company’s later takeover by Boots in 1968. The typography, colours and general style suggest a likely 1950s date.

Today, this charming little tin makes a lovely display piece for collectors of vintage chemist packaging, pharmacy memorabilia, old advertising tins, apothecary display items or social history objects. It would sit beautifully in a cabinet, curiosity shelf, vintage bathroom display, chemist shop collection or alongside other small medical and household tins.
