A wonderfully decorative vintage Atsonea Superior Products table mirror, made in England, most likely dating from the 1950s–1960s may be older. This is a beautifully theatrical piece, with a shaped Rococo Revival frame, scrolling foliate decoration, floral cresting and an attractive aged gilt finish with warm coral-pink painted panels.
The mirror has a tall, elegant silhouette and stands on its original folding easel support, making it ideal for use as a dressing table mirror, bedroom accent piece, hallway display or decorative interiors prop. The frame has that lovely mid-century interpretation of 18th-century French Rococo style: ornate, romantic and slightly flamboyant, but still very usable in a modern eclectic home.
The original maker’s plaque remains on the reverse and reads “Atsonea Superior Products – Made in England”, which is a lovely detail for collectors and helps confirm the piece’s origin.
Atsonea was an English mirror maker particularly associated with decorative, gilt, Rococo, Baroque and Regency-style mirrors during the mid-20th century. Similar Atsonea mirrors are commonly catalogued as English pieces from the 1950s and 1960s, with some examples described as being produced in Southall, Middlesex. Their mirrors were often made to look like traditional giltwood, though many were constructed from moulded composition/plasterwork over a wooden backing, giving the grand look of carved giltwood at a more accessible price point.
The piece displays beautifully, with attractive age-related wear to the gilding and painted surfaces. There are knocks, rubbing, surface marks and some losses to the finish, particularly around the raised decorative areas, all adding to its vintage charm. The mirror plate appears usable and reflective, with light age and wear consistent with use.
