The English Annual — c.1836 — Edward Churton, London — With Fine Steel Engravings Including Aristocratic Portraits

.

Step back into the romantic world of the 1830s with this elegant early-Victorian gift book — The English Annual, published in London by Edward Churton of 26 Holles Street, Cavendish Square, and produced at the height of the literary “annual” craze.

.

These luxurious volumes were the coffee-table books of their day: beautifully printed, richly gilt-edged, and filled with poetry, short fiction, travel writing, essays and exquisite steel-engraved plates — making them the perfect sentimental gift for the Christmas season.

.

This volume was issued shortly after the success of earlier editions circulated in France, Germany and America, and likely dates to around 1835–1837 — right at the cusp of the early Victorian era.

.

💫 A Wonderful Collection of Fine Engravings

.

All original plates are present — a real joy for collectors.

.

The engravings include society portraits and romantic scenes after leading artists of the period, among them:

✨ Richard Cosway (1742–1821) — Regency portrait miniaturist of great renown

✨ Sir Thomas Lawrence R.A. — celebrated portrait painter

✨ William Daniell R.A. (1769–1837) — famed landscape and maritime artist

.

Engravers include T. A. Dean and M. J. Starling, both respected names in 19th-century book illustration.

.

Among the most beautiful plates is a refined stipple engraving of:

“Elizabeth, Dowager Countess of Errol”

after Richard Cosway

portraying the Countess, book in hand, in soft contemplative pose — an image that perfectly embodies the romantic literary spirit of the age.

.

Other portraits include titled and aristocratic ladies such as the Duchess of Sutherland and Lady Erskine, reflecting the period fascination with high society and graceful feminine beauty.

.

Every plate is printed on its own sheet with caption engraving and fine detail still wonderfully visible.

.

📜 Contents & Literary Style

Inside you’ll find a blend of:

✔ Poetry

✔ Romantic and reflective prose

✔ Short fiction

✔ Descriptive writing

✔ Society and character pieces

— each carefully selected to complement the engravings and create a rich reading experience.

.

These books weren’t simply read — they were admired, gifted and treasured.

.

📘 Binding & Presentation

Original full leather binding

Beautiful gilt scrollwork to the boards

.

Gilt spine decoration and title

All page edges gilt — still gleaming softly with age

Original endpapers present

A pleasing, tactile example with real presence

.

There is some expected gentle rubbing, corner wear and age toning, and areas of binding looseness internally — entirely consistent with a book nearing two centuries old. The plates remain securely bound and all are present, which is increasingly rare.

.

Overall, a charming, honest and highly decorative antique volume.

.

🌹 Why We Love It

Because it captures everything enchanting about Regency-Victorian romanticism — the soft faces, the flowing gowns, the gilt edges and literary elegance. It’s the kind of book that invites you to pour tea, turn the pages slowly, and imagine the hands that once received it as a treasured Christmas gift.

.

Whether displayed on a writing desk, stacked with other antique volumes, or added to a fine library collection — it feels truly special.

.

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
