Vintage 1930s Rowntree’s Floral Tin – Pansy Design | York
A charming pre-war chocolate tin with its original Rowntree’s mark
-
Bring a little nostalgic beauty to your home with this delightful 1930s Rowntree’s chocolate tin, decorated in a vibrant pansy motif and finished with the company’s classic Rowntree’s York emblem. These tins were originally designed as luxury chocolate boxes, the sort you’d gift for birthdays, anniversaries and “thinking of you” moments – and they still radiate that same heartfelt charm today.
-
This unusual oval, pebble-shaped form is a design Rowntree’s produced in the late 1930s and early 1940s. The surface features a faux-wood basketweave pattern, overlaid with richly coloured pansies in red, yellow, blue and violet. It’s a wonderfully warm, cottage-garden aesthetic that Rowntree’s became known for during the interwar years.
-
Open the tin and you’ll find the original tinplate-gilded interior, now naturally timeworn with speckling and gentle oxidation – exactly what we expect from pre-WWII metalware. Inside the lid is the authentic Rowntree’s YORK trademark, beautifully preserved in its oval cartouche. The tin opens cleanly with a split-fitted lid and displays beautifully on any dresser, craft table or vintage-themed kitchen shelf.

Condition
This lovely tin shows the honest patina expected of an item approaching 90 years old. Some surface wear, light rubbing, and small areas of paint loss form part of its vintage charm. The colours remain surprisingly vivid, the lid fits neatly, and the interior is clean with age-related speckling throughout.
