Medieval times: Towns and cities in Europe used bell towers to warn residents of fires.
Alarm boxes: In 1852, Moses Farmer and William Channing invented alarm boxes that used a crank system to send the location of a fire to the nearest alarm station.
Automated electric fire alarms: In 1890, Francis Robbins Upton and Fernando Dibble invented the first automated electric fire alarm. The alarm had a battery, a bell dome, a magnet, and a thermostatic device. When the thermostatic device detected heat above a certain level, the battery closed the circuit and the bell rang.
