A striking vintage Czech art glass bowl or centrepiece, beautifully formed in sweeping organic lines with rich layers of turquoise, aqua and deep cobalt blue glass. The piece has a wonderfully fluid, sculptural quality, with pulled wing-like sides and a deep central well that catches the light beautifully from every angle.

The glass has the dramatic layered look often associated with the sommerso technique, where colour appears suspended within the clear outer casing. The strong blue and green tones, heavy rounded body and freeform mid-century shape are very much in keeping with Czech glass design of the 1950s–1970s.

This piece is attributed to Josef Hospodka for Chřibská Glassworks, Czechoslovakia. Hospodka was one of the key designers associated with Chřibská, known for bold sculptural glass forms, vibrant colour combinations and expressive pulled shapes. Similar Chřibská / Hospodka bowls appear in blue-green, amber-blue, pink-orange and cobalt colourways, often described as Czech sommerso or Bohemian art glass.

A beautiful statement piece for a sideboard, console table or collector’s cabinet. It would work equally well as a decorative bowl, a glass sculpture, or a centrepiece within a mid-century modern interior.

Condition:

Very good vintage condition overall. There may be light surface wear commensurate with age and display use, but no obvious major damage visible from the photographs. Please see photos as part of the description.

Maker / history note:

Chřibská Glassworks was one of the most recognisable Czech glass producers of the 20th century. Josef Hospodka’s designs are especially admired for their organic forms, vivid colour layering and sculptural presence. His work helped define the look of post-war Czech art glass, combining traditional Bohemian glassmaking skill with modern, expressive design.

“Attributed to Josef Hospodka for Chřibská” rather than “by Josef Hospodka” unfortunately no label, pattern number or catalogue match.
