Huntley & Palmers began in 1822 as a small bakery in Reading founded by Joseph Huntley. The company expanded significantly after George Palmer became a partner in 1841, leading to the opening of a large factory in 1846 and making it the largest biscuit manufacturer in the world by 1900. Biscuit production in Reading ended in 1976.
Early history
1822: Joseph Huntley, a Quaker schoolmaster, established a small bakery in Reading.
1829: Huntley's son, Thomas, became a partner, and the business was renamed Joseph Huntley & Son.
1841: George Palmer, a distant cousin and fellow Quaker, joined the partnership, and the firm was renamed Huntley & Palmer.
Growth and expansion
1846: The company opened a large factory on Kings Road.
1857: The Huntley family's interest was bought out by George Palmer and his brothers. The company name was retained, and the Palmer family became the main partners.
By 1900: Huntley & Palmers was the largest biscuit manufacturer in the world, employing over 5,000 people.
Later years and legacy
1976: The company ended its biscuit production in Reading.
Legacy: The company's history contributed to Reading becoming known as "Biscuit Town".
Today: A significant collection of the company's archives is held at the University of Reading, and the history is explored in exhibitions at Reading Museum.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
