Maker History – New Haven Watch Company

The New Haven Watch Company was founded in Connecticut, USA, in 1853, originally producing clocks before expanding into pocket watches in the late 19th century.

The company became well known for:

Affordable, reliable everyday timepieces

Mass-production techniques that made watches accessible to ordinary people

Exporting widely to Britain and Europe

.

New Haven watches were practical working watches rather than luxury items, but today they are appreciated for their honest engineering, vintage character, and historical connection to early industrial watchmaking.

Production continued until the early 20th century, when increasing competition and the shift toward wristwatches led to the company’s closure in the 1920s.
