SKU: ODS1848

Antique 1852 Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine – July–December – Half Leather Bound Literary Volume with Binder’s Ticket & Visible Binder’s Waste

.

Step back into the literary, political and cultural world of mid-Victorian Britain with this wonderfully characterful 1852 bound volume of Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine — one of the most influential periodicals of the 19th century.

.

Beautifully bound in the period in half leather with marbled boards and page edges, this handsome, time-softened volume gathers together the complete run of issues from July to December 1852 (Volume LXXII), printed by William Blackwood & Sons, Edinburgh & London.

.

This is a book that doesn’t just hold history — it feels like it.

.

✒️ A Literary Powerhouse of the Victorian Age

.

Blackwood’s Magazine was required reading for the thinking classes of the 19th century — conservative in outlook, sharp-tongued in style, and home to some of the most important voices of the period.

.

This volume includes:

✔ The first publication of “Katie Stewart — A True Story” by Margaret Oliphant, serialized across five parts. Oliphant became one of the most prolific and respected Scottish Victorian authors — and Blackwood’s was her literary home.

.

✔ “My Novel; or, Varieties in English Life” by Edward Bulwer-Lytton — serialized in multiple parts throughout the year. Bulwer-Lytton was one of the great names of the Victorian literary world.

.

✔ Essays, commentary and fiction on politics, culture, travel and society including:

On National Distress

English Politics

The General Election

Science and Dangers in Australia

The Pope of Protestant England

The Czar – A German View

The Great Age – A Fable

Don Beniowsky

.

Together, they paint a vivid picture of 1852 — a year of social change, empire, debate, and the death of the Duke of Wellington.

.

📚 Physical Description

This is a Victorian half-leather binding with:

✨ Raised bands and gilt-lettered title panels reading: “Blackwood’s Magazine – July to Dec. 1852”

✨ Leather spine and corners

✨ Marbled paper boards

✨ Marbled page edges

✨ Tight, well-preserved text block

✨ Charming age-related wear to the leather and boards

Inside the front board sits a wonderful surviving binder’s ticket:

“Bound by Anthony Birdsall, Market Place, Northampton.”

.

Provincial binder’s tickets are highly collectible — they trace the book’s history right back to its Victorian owner commissioning this bespoke binding.

.

🧩 A Lovely Curiosity — Visible Victorian Binder’s Waste

Peeping inside the hollow of the spine, you can glimpse printed text from recycled book pages or newspapers — this is binder’s waste, a common 19th-century practice where leftover printed paper was reused inside bindings for reinforcement.

It’s a detail book lovers adore — one of those small, authentic quirks that speaks of hand-craftsmanship, thrift and the quiet poetry of reuse in the Victorian book trade.

.

🖋 Ownership & Provenance

Inside are early ink inscriptions including:

“Arthur J. Terry 1856”

and a later label for “G. T. Smith” dated 1888

Multiple hands, multiple lives — a book that has travelled gently through time.

.

⭐ Condition

In good, readable antique condition, showing its age beautifully:

✔ Binding sound

✔ Some rubbing and scuffing to leather and boards

✔ Spine solid with raised bands visible

✔ Pages clean with light age toning & occasional foxing

✔ Binder’s waste visible internally — stable but fragile

A well-loved, authentic Victorian volume, full of life, scholarship and stories.

.

🌿 Why We Love It

Because this is more than a book — it’s a snapshot of Victorian intellect and imagination, wrapped in original leather and carrying with it every hand that turned its pages. The binder’s ticket, the recycled paper hidden within the spine, the inked names — all of it reminds us that objects travel through lives, gathering stories as they go.

.

This is a wonderful piece for:

📖 Collectors of Victorian literature

📜 Historians & researchers

🏛 Lovers of Scottish literary heritage

📚 Readers who cherish the romance of real books

And of course — anyone who believes books should have character.

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
