Vintage Wooden Goodyear Welt or Turn Shoe Needles Box

This wonderful little wooden slide-lid box once held industrial sewing needles used for Goodyear welted or turn-shoe machinery — the type used by traditional cobblers and shoe factories to stitch quality leather footwear. The worn gilt label reads:

Manufactured in U.S.A. for the
United Shoe Machinery Corporation
Boston, Mass., U.S.A.
by The Torrington Company, Torrington, Conn.”

The Torrington Company began life in Connecticut in 1864 as a manufacturer of needles and fine steel goods, eventually becoming one of the leading industrial needle producers in the world. The United Shoe Machinery Corporation (USMC) — founded in 1899 — dominated the shoe-making machinery industry throughout the early 20th century, supplying the specialist equipment used in mass footwear production. Together, the two companies provided the precision tools needed to keep the world in well-made shoes!

This box originally contained 100 “Round Point” No. 41 needles, and the original slide-top wooden case remains intact — complete with its fabulous aged label full of patina, workshop wear, and history. The paper label shows age-related scuffs, fading and marks, all of which add to the authentic industrial charm. The inside is empty now, making it perfect for display — or for storing tiny treasures, jewellery findings or sewing notions.
