Antique Edwardian J. Lyons Maison Lyons Dundee Cake Tin Cadby Hall Kensington
Antique Edwardian J. Lyons “Maison Lyons” Dundee Cake Tin | Cadby Hall, Kensington | c.1905–1915
.
There is something deeply evocative about an early Lyons tin – and this beautiful Edwardian Dundee Cake tin captures that quiet sense of history perfectly.
.
Produced for J. Lyons & Co. Ltd. in the early 20th century, this tin dates to the period when Lyons operated from their famous Cadby Hall premises in Kensington, a detail proudly printed on the side panels and a wonderful aid to dating. The elegant use of the French-styled name “Maison Lyons” reflects the Edwardian fascination with continental sophistication and luxury, even in everyday food packaging.
.
The lid features a charming framed cartouche reading “Maison Lyons – Dundee Cake”, surrounded by restrained ornamental detailing. The soft cream and yellow tones, now beautifully mellowed with age, contrast gently against the darkened steel body, creating exactly the sort of surface patina collectors seek out.
.
Originally used to contain Lyons’ premium Dundee Cake – a rich fruit cake traditionally finished with concentric rings of almonds – tins like this were designed not only for preservation, but to be kept and reused in the home. As a result, they have survived as cherished domestic objects, quietly accumulating decades of honest wear.
.
This example is wonderfully untouched. The surface shows authentic age-related oxidation, rusting, and wear, with no repainting or over-cleaning. The typography remains legible, the structure is sound, and the tin retains that unmistakable early 20th-century presence that simply can’t be replicated.
.
Perfect for:
A vintage kitchen or pantry display
Storing letters, sewing notions, or ephemera
Styling in a shop display or food-history collection
Collectors of Lyons, British advertising tins, or Edwardian packaging
