Antique Scenic Lithographed Biscuit Tin – Shaped Form with Rural Landscape – c.1900–1920

.

Description

A beautifully timeworn early 20th-century lithographed biscuit tin, featuring an unusual shaped, gently curved form and richly coloured scenic decoration.

.

The deep red faux-wood ground is highlighted with gilt scrollwork and oval landscape panels, while the lid carries a charming rural scene at sunset – a cottage, figures at work, and distant mountains rendered in warm Edwardian tones. Inside, the tin retains its original golden lacquer finish, a hallmark of quality biscuit tins of the period.

.

This piece has developed a wonderful, honest patina over time. The surface shows areas of wear, scuffing and loss to the lithography, particularly on the lid, giving it the authentic character collectors of antique tinware appreciate.

.

Originally produced to hold luxury biscuits or confectionery, it now makes a striking decorative storage piece for a vintage kitchen, display cabinet, or curated collection.

Possible Maker & History

This style of shaped scenic tin was produced in Britain and continental Europe between c.1900 and 1920, during the golden age of decorative biscuit packaging.

While unmarked, the design and construction are consistent with work by major manufacturers such as:

Huntley & Palmers (Reading)

Peek Frean (London)

Jacob & Co. (Liverpool/Dublin)

Continental makers such as Van Melle or other European lithographic tin producers

.

The shaped body, gilt interior, and pastoral artwork reflect the Edwardian marketing trend of turning biscuit tins into keepsake household objects – many were deliberately saved and reused, which is why pieces like this still survive today.
