Pair of Vintage BOC Soda Siphons – Mid-Century British Barware – Amber & Smoky Brown Glass – c.1950s–1960s

.

A wonderfully stylish pair of mid-century British soda siphons, manufactured by BOC (British Oxygen Company) and made in England.

.

Standing approximately 30cm tall, these iconic retro barware pieces date to the 1950s–1960s, a golden era of home entertaining, cocktail culture and drinks-trolley glamour.

.

Crafted with elegantly shaped coloured glass bodies, one in a warm amber honey tone and the other in a rich smoky brown, each siphon is fitted with its original chrome-plated lever mechanism and contrasting Bakelite-style plastic top. The combination of colour, form and materials perfectly captures the optimistic, design-led spirit of the post-war period.

.

Both bases are clearly marked “BOC – Made in England”, along with serial numbers, confirming their authenticity and British manufacture.

.

The lever mechanism is stamped “Use One Bulb Only”, indicating compatibility with standard CO₂ soda bulbs (though, as with all vintage siphons, these are sold as decorative items unless professionally serviced).

.

History & context

BOC, founded in 1886, is best known for its role in industrial and medical gases, but during the mid-20th century it also produced domestic carbonation equipment for the home and hospitality market. Soda siphons like these were a staple of stylish households, used for gin and soda, whisky highballs and cocktails, and proudly displayed on drinks cabinets and trolleys.

.

Condition

Good vintage condition overall, with honest signs of age and use.

.

There is light surface wear to the glass, minor scuffs, and some age-related patina and light pitting to the chrome fittings, all entirely consistent with pieces of this era. No cracks or chips observed to the glass.
