Vintage early 20th century Carlton Ware rouge Royal ceramic art deco pin dish. This exquisite dish is by renowned makers Carlton ware. Clearly marked, probably 1930s/40s.

Carlton Ware's history spans from its establishment in 1890 by Wiltshaw & Robinson in Stoke-on-Trent, to its closure in the 1990s. Initially trading as Wiltshaw & Robinson, they introduced the trademark "Carlton Ware" in 1894 and renamed their factory the Carlton Works. The company experienced periods of expansion and change, including a partnership dissolution in 1911 and a period of ownership by the Wiltshaw family, eventually passing to Arthur Wood and Sons in 1968. Carlton Ware was known for its diverse range of wares, including giftware, domestic pottery, and its contribution to the Art Deco pottery movement.

Key Milestones:

1890: Wiltshaw & Robinson establishes the pottery in Stoke-on-Trent.

1894: Introduction of the "Carlton Ware" trademark and renaming of the factory.

1911: Partnership dissolves, leading to the formation of Wiltshaw & Robinson Limited.

1918: James Wiltshaw's death, and his son, Frederick Cuthbert Wiltshaw, takes over.

1920s-1930s: Carlton Ware is credited with creating the pottery Art Deco movement.

1930: Acquisition of Birks, Rawlins & Co.

1952: Alice Wiltshaw, wife of Frederick Cuthbert, is murdered in a robbery.

1958: The company is renamed Carlton Ware Limited.

1968: Arthur Wood and Sons acquire Carlton Ware.

1990s: Carlton Ware is closed and the trademark is sold.
