The first commercially available first aid kits emerged in 1888, thanks to a co-founder of Johnson & Johnson, who recognized the need for accessible medical supplies, particularly for railway workers. These early kits, designed to address injuries sustained during construction and on trains, contained basic supplies like dressings, antiseptics, and pain relief. The concept of first aid as a profession also developed in the 19th century, with the military and the Royal Humane Society playing a key role in training for battlefield wounds and drowning rescues.
