Identification & Maker History

This piece is marked “GOTHIC WADE HEATH ENGLAND”, which places it within Wade Heath’s decorative pottery output. Wade Heath was part of the wider Wade pottery family, associated with Stoke-on-Trent and the Staffordshire ceramics tradition. John Wade & Co later became Wade Heath & Co, a branch particularly known for decorative wares, including Art Deco vases and ornamental ceramics.

The “Gothic” Wade Heath mark is generally associated with pieces dating from around c.1930 to 1954, with some marks showing “Gothic” above or below the Wade Heath name. The design here fits beautifully with that period: angular stepped form, stylised floral relief, raised gilt/brown scrollwork, soft pastel enamelling and a cream glazed ground. Wade Heath’s strongest decorative period is often considered the 1930s–1950s, when the company produced Art Deco-influenced vases, jugs, bowls and ornamental pieces.

A beautifully decorative vintage Wade Heath “Gothic” wall pocket vase, made in England and dating to approximately the 1930s–1950s. With its striking stepped fan shape, raised floral decoration and elegant Art Deco styling, this is a charming piece of British decorative pottery with plenty of period character.

The front features a stylised flower and scrolling foliage design, moulded in relief and picked out in soft green, cream, pink and purple tones. The raised outlining has a warm gilt-brown lustre effect, giving the piece an attractive depth and a distinctly Art Deco feel. The shape itself is particularly appealing: angular, symmetrical and architectural, with a central tapered panel flanked by stepped side sections.

The reverse bears the impressed/printed mark:

“GOTHIC

WADE

HEATH

ENGLAND”

Wade Heath was part of the wider Wade pottery tradition of Stoke-on-Trent, an area long celebrated for British ceramic production. The Wade Heath name is especially associated with decorative pottery, including Art Deco-inspired vases, jugs and ornamental wares. Their “Gothic” range is now appreciated by collectors for its distinctive shapes, textured decoration and very recognisable period style.

This piece would originally have been used as a wall pocket vase, designed to hold a small posy of flowers or simply to decorate a hallway, bedroom, parlour or fireside wall. Today it works beautifully as a decorative vintage accent — ideal for an Art Deco-inspired interior, a collection of Staffordshire pottery, or a display of British mid-century and pre-war ceramics.

Condition

In good vintage decorative condition with age-related wear. There is visible crazing to the glaze, typical of pottery of this age, along with small chips/losses and surface marks as shown in the photographs. These do not detract from its display appeal and add to its honest vintage character. Please study the images carefully as they form part of the description.
