Anglo-American Oil Company: In 1888, the Anglo-American Oil Company was established in the United Kingdom.
Esso A.G.: In 1890, Standard Oil and local ship merchants in Bremen established Deutsch-Amerikanische Petroleum Gesellschaft, which later became Esso A.G.
Esso in the UK: During World War II, the UK government requisitioned Esso's tanker fleet to maintain fuel supplies. In 1951, the Fawley Refinery was officially opened, becoming the UK's largest refinery.
