Vintage 1950s Tala No. 1420 Food Decorator Set – Original Boxed Kitchenalia

Vintage 1950s Tala No. 1420 Food Decorator Set – Original Boxed Kitchenalia

A wonderfully nostalgic piece of British kitchenalia, this vintage Tala Food Decorator Set No. 1420 dates from around the 1950s and survives in its original, wonderfully illustrated cardboard box.

Made by Tala, one of Britain’s best-known names in traditional baking and kitchen equipment, the set was designed for the decorative presentation of both sweet and savoury dishes. The original packaging enthusiastically describes it as indispensable for decorating meat dishes, salads and trifles, as well as for making éclairs, meringues and other decorative treats.

Inside are the original-style metal decorating attachments, including different shaped nozzles intended to create decorative piping effects. The original fabric piping bag appears to be absent, so the set is offered primarily as a charming collectible example of mid-century kitchenware rather than for modern culinary use.

The box itself is a real highlight. Decorated in typical 1950s colours of red, pale blue and yellow, it features illustrations of elaborately presented cold meats, hard-boiled eggs, vegetables, cakes and pastries — a delightful snapshot of post-war British entertaining and the importance once placed on presenting food with a flourish.

One side of the box also advertises other Tala products of the period, including the company’s card cutters, Hot ’n’ Cold rolling pin and flour sifter, adding another lovely piece of social and advertising history.

Why we love it:

This is exactly the sort of everyday object that tells a bigger social-history story. From the beautifully presented cold buffet on the front to the instructions for decorating trifles and meringues, it captures the optimism and domestic style of the 1950s kitchen beautifully. A charming display piece for a vintage kitchen, kitchenalia collection or retro food enthusiast.
