The "UCBS" in "UCBS oatcake history" refers to the United Co-operative Baking Society, a company that once produced oatcakes and other baked goods, primarily for co-operative societies in Scotland. The UCBS had a significant biscuit factory in Clydebank, which opened in 1903. While the UCBS made oatcakes, they were not the sole or primary focus of the company.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

UCBS and Co-operatives:

The UCBS was founded in Glasgow in 1869, aiming to supply bread to co-operative stores.

Clydebank Factory:

The UCBS built a large biscuit factory in Clydebank in 1903 to serve the Clydebank Co-operative Society, which had previously been dissatisfied with the service provided by the UCBS's main bakery.

Oatcakes and other goods:

The Clydebank factory produced a variety of biscuits and baked goods, including oatcakes, for co-operative societies throughout Scotland.

Historical Context:

The factory was a major employer in Clydebank, providing work for 500 people at its peak. The factory also had its own railway siding.

Oatcake History:

Oatcakes themselves have a long history in Scotland, dating back to at least Roman times, and were a staple food for Scottish soldiers in the 14th century. They are traditionally made from ground oats, water, and sometimes salt, cooked on a griddle or bakestone.

Staffordshire Oatcakes:

It's important to note that while the UCBS oatcake is a specific product, "oatcake" is a broader term referring to a type of flatbread made from oats. Staffordshire oatcakes, for example, are a regional specialty of North Staffordshire, different from the Scottish oatcakes.

About Oatcakes:

Oatcakes are a type of flatbread or cracker made primarily from oats.

They are a traditional Scottish food, historically known as the "bread of Scotland".

There are also regional variations, such as the Staffordshire oatcake, which is a savory pancake-like item distinct from the Scottish biscuit-like oatcake.

Oatcakes are considered a healthy alternative to bread due to their high fiber content and slow-release carbohydrates, providing sustained energy.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
