Salt cellars

Salt cellars were used in ancient Rome and continued to be used until the 20th century.

In the Middle Ages, salt cellars were placed in front of the most important person at a feast to indicate their social standing.

Salt cellars were kept near the stove for easy access while cooking.

Salt cellars were often made of silver and came with glass liners to protect the metal from corrosion.

Salt cellars were also known as salt boxes or salt pigs.

Salt shakers

Salt shakers became more common after the introduction of anti-caking agents in 1911.

Salt shakers are often sold in matched sets.

Salt shakers can be simple glass containers or more ornate works of art.

Salt shakers can be designed to represent specific occasions or holidays.

Smelling salts

Smelling salts were stored in glass bottles from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

Women carried their smelling salts in decorative containers called vinaigrettes.

Lavender was a popular scent for smelling salts.
