Antique Edwardian / Early 20th Century art nouveau Mahogany Dressing Table swing Mirror

A beautifully crafted early 20th-century dressing table mirror, combining practicality with timeless period charm. This elegant piece features a rich mahogany frame with carved decorative detailing, flanked by shaped supports on a sturdy plinth base. The warm patina and gentle wear give it that authentic character collectors and interior stylists love.

The mirror is set above a shaped base incorporating a useful shallow tray with cut-out handles — perfect for holding brushes, jewellery, watches, or everyday dressing table essentials. The proportions and craftsmanship suggest an Edwardian to early Art nouveau period (c.1900–1925), when well-made domestic vanity pieces became both functional and decorative features of the bedroom or dressing room.

The Story of Art Nouveau (c.1890–1910)

45 cm wide

31 cm tall

7 cm depth at base

Art Nouveau — meaning “New Art” — was an international design movement that flourished between about 1890 and the outbreak of the First World War. It emerged as a reaction against the heavy historic revival styles of the Victorian era and the mass-produced look of early industrialisation. Designers wanted something fresh, modern, and expressive — art for a new age.

---

The Philosophy Behind the Style

At its heart, Art Nouveau aimed to:

Unite art and everyday life — beautiful design should be part of daily living.

Break away from historical imitation — no Gothic, no Rococo copies.

Celebrate nature — flowing lines inspired by plants, flowers, insects, and the human form.

Embrace craftsmanship alongside modern materials and techniques.

This idea of a “total work of art” (architecture, furniture, textiles, glass, and graphics all designed together) made Art Nouveau especially influential for interiors.

---

Recognising Art Nouveau

Look for these signature features:

The “whiplash line”

Long, sinuous curves that sweep and flow like vines or hair.

Nature motifs

Irises, lilies, orchids

Dragonflies, peacocks, butterflies

Leaves, stems, seed pods

Organic forms Furniture and metalwork often appear to grow or flow rather than sit rigidly.

Sensuous elegance Female figures, flowing hair, and graceful silhouettes are common, especially in posters and decorative arts.

---

Art Nouveau Around the World

Although unified in spirit, each country gave the movement its own character:

France & Belgium – the heart of the movement (Hector Guimard, Émile Gallé)

Britain – the Glasgow Style (Charles Rennie Mackintosh)

Austria – Vienna Secession (Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann)

Spain – Catalan Modernisme (Antoni Gaudí)

United States – decorative arts and glass (Louis Comfort Tiffany)

Germany – known as Jugendstil

---

Materials & Decorative Arts

Art Nouveau excelled in:

Stained and favrile glass

Silver and metalwork

Jewellery (often enamelled and nature-inspired)

Furniture with flowing carved lines

Posters and graphic art (notably Alphonse Mucha)

Ceramics and decorative objects

For antiques and interiors, the movement is especially loved for its warmth, craftsmanship, and romantic organic style.

---

Why It Didn’t Last Long

By around 1910, tastes began shifting toward:

Simpler geometry

Cleaner lines

More machine-friendly production

This led directly into Art Deco and modernism. In many ways, Art Nouveau was the emotional, nature-inspired prelude to the sleek modern world.

---

Collector Appeal Today

Art Nouveau pieces are highly desirable because they:

Represent a short, distinctive design period

Showcase exceptional craftsmanship

Fit beautifully into eclectic, characterful interiors

Sit perfectly between Victorian richness and early modern design

---

looking at this mirror, the flowing carved curves and organic detailing suggest a lovely Art Nouveau influence, especially in the side supports and frame ornament.

vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
