Title: 19th-Century Lithograph – “The Wreck of the Dutton, Plymouth”

-

This compelling 19th-century lithograph captures the dramatic wreck of the Dutton East Indiaman at Plymouth Sound in January 1796. The Dutton, a large merchant vessel, was carrying troops and supplies when it was driven ashore during a fierce storm. The scene shows the wrecked ship with figures on shore and rescuers in action, vividly portraying one of the most heroic maritime rescues of the era.

-

The event is historically significant for the involvement of Sir Edward Pellew (later Viscount Exmouth), who personally boarded the stricken vessel and, with the help of a young sailor, Jeremiah Coghlan, orchestrated the rescue of nearly 500 people. This daring operation cemented both men's reputations for bravery and leadership.

-

The lithograph is framed in a period wooden frame, showing signs of age-related wear, foxing, and some water damage that add to its authenticity and character. A clipping from the Daily Telegraph (dated 1983) detailing Jeremiah Coghlan’s heroics is included on the reverse, offering extra historical context.

Historical Context:

The Wreck of the Dutton and a Daring Rescue

On January 26, 1796, the East Indiaman Dutton was caught in a violent gale as it attempted to leave Plymouth Sound, England, bound for India. The ship was driven onto the rocks below Plymouth Hoe, placing the lives of its crew, soldiers, and passengers in grave danger.

-

Amid chaotic scenes, Captain Sir Edward Pellew, commander of the frigate Indefatigable, took it upon himself to organize a rescue. Despite towering waves and treacherous conditions, Pellew boarded the wreck and maintained order, directing the evacuation of those trapped aboard. His courage and leadership saved nearly 500 lives.

-

Among the rescuers was a young Irish sailor, Jeremiah Coghlan, whose bravery during the rescue so impressed Pellew that he took Coghlan into his own service. Coghlan would go on to have a distinguished naval career, renowned for his fearlessness and quick thinking in numerous engagements.

-

The wreck of the Dutton, and the heroism it inspired, became a celebrated story in British naval history, immortalized in prints and paintings like the lithograph shown here. These artworks served both as commemorations and patriotic reminders of Britain’s naval prowess during the age of sail.

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.
