Walker & Hall – Maker’s History (Sheffield Silversmiths & Electroplaters)

.

Walker & Hall were one of the most important and respected names in British silver and silver plate, closely associated with the famous metalworking city of Sheffield, England. The company became especially well known for producing beautifully designed electroplated tableware and later sterling silver, sold across Britain and exported internationally.

.

Origins & Founding

Walker & Hall began in Sheffield in the early 19th century, during a time when Britain was at the height of the Industrial Revolution and Sheffield was rapidly becoming the world centre for quality cutlery, plating and domestic wares.

The firm was founded in 1845

Founders: George Walker and Henry Hall

The company’s base remained in Sheffield, where their workshops produced an enormous range of household and luxury wares.

Why They Became Famous

Walker & Hall gained a strong reputation for:

✅ Top-quality silver plate

✅ Excellent design (very stylish forms in Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau and later Art Deco periods)

✅ High production standards — their plating tended to wear better than many cheaper competitors

✅ Huge product range

They produced almost everything you’d expect in a proper Victorian/Edwardian home, such as:

tea sets

coffee pots

trays

entree dishes

candelabra

cutlery

condiment sets

bonbon dishes

serving spoons

table shakers and casters

and later jewellery and presentation items

.

Walker & Hall and Silver Plate (EPNS / A1 Quality)

Walker & Hall were especially prominent during the rise of electroplating, which transformed dining and entertaining in the Victorian era.

Electroplated silver made stylish tableware affordable to the expanding middle class, and Sheffield firms like Walker & Hall were perfectly placed to supply demand.

You’ll often see their plated items stamped with quality terms such as:

EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver)

A1 (a commonly used grading meaning top quality plating)

So if you ever see an A1 mark with Walker & Hall, it generally means it was intended as good quality household silver plate, not bargain-basement.

Hallmarking and Sterling Silver

Walker & Hall also produced sterling silver, and their pieces may carry Sheffield hallmarks (crown/lion/date letters depending on period).

On sterling, you might find:

W&H maker’s marks in a shaped punch

Sheffield assay marks

full British hallmark sets

Retail & Public Presence

Walker & Hall weren’t only manufacturers — they were also successful retailers. Over time they established an impressive commercial presence, including shops and showrooms, helping them become a nationally recognised brand.

.

Owning Walker & Hall in the Victorian/Edwardian period would have felt “aspirational but attainable” — excellent quality, fashionable, and respected.

.

Collectability Today

Walker & Hall remains collectible because:

their designs are elegant and classic

the items still display beautifully

pieces are usually well made

they work wonderfully in:

traditional interiors

English country house style

vintage tablescapes

wedding / event styling

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
