Art Nouveau Belgian Terracotta Jardinière – Etalle “Terre Cuite” Mark, c.1890–1910

-

Description

This striking Art Nouveau terracotta jardinière or cachepot dates to the late 19th–early 20th century and carries an impressed mark reading “V. Etalle Terre Cuite”, placing its origin in Etalle, Belgium.

-

The jardinière is beautifully modelled with a reclining maiden in flowing drapery framed by foliate and floral motifs, a classic theme of the Art Nouveau period (c.1890–1910). The scalloped rim and elegant scroll handles add to its organic charm, while the reddish-brown earthenware body has a bronzed wash that enhances its sculptural detail.

-

A fine example of Belgian Art Nouveau decorative terracotta, this piece would have originally been used as a table centrepiece or cachepot. Today, it serves as a distinctive decorative object, bringing the elegance of fin-de-siècle design into a modern setting.

-

Condition

Good antique condition overall, with age-related wear consistent with use.

Some scuffs to the handles and rim.

Interior shows discolouration and surface wear from age and possible past use.

Stamp partially worn but legible: “V. Etalle Terre Cuite.”

-

These signs of age are expected for authentic terracotta pieces of this era and contribute to its antique character.
