Harrods, the iconic London department store, has a rich history beginning in 1824 as a small draper's shop in Southwark. It evolved into a luxury department store in Knightsbridge, renowned for its opulent displays and diverse merchandise. Over the years, Harrods has adapted to changing times, expanding its offerings and facing both triumphs and challenges, including a devastating fire in 1883. Today, it remains a global symbol of luxury retail and a must-visit destination in London.

Here's a more detailed look at Harrods' history:

Harrod moves to Knightsbridge, near the site of the Great Exhibition of 1851, hoping to attract visitors.

1880s:

The business expands, adding groceries, medicines, perfumes, stationery, and more.

Growth and Expansion (1881-1959):

1883: A fire destroys the Knightsbridge store, but Harrods manages to fulfill Christmas orders.

1884: A larger store reopens, marking a period of significant growth.

1898: Harrods installs one of London's first escalators.

Early 1900s: Harrods expands to occupy most of its current site on Brompton Road.

1959: The House of House of Fraser.

1994: Harrods is split off from House of Fraser when the latter is relisted on the stock exchange.

2006: The current Harrods Group is established by the Al-Fayed brothers.

2010: The Qatar Investment Authority acquires Harrods.
