The Arts and Crafts movement was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution and the low status of decorative arts in Britain in the late 19th century:

Origins

The movement began in the Pre-Raphaelite circle with the founding of Morris and Co. in 1861 by William Morris.

Philosophy

The movement's philosophy was based on the ideas of A. W. N. Pugin and John Ruskin. Pugin's writings promoted the Gothic Revival, while Ruskin advocated for medieval architecture as a model for quality materials and honest craftsmanship.

Design

The movement promoted simple, functional design that focused on natural materials and craftsmanship. Arts and Crafts designs often featured natural motifs, such as plants, in wallpapers and fabrics.

Spread

The movement spread to Europe, America, Japan, and throughout the British Empire.

Decline

The movement began to decline during World War I and was surpassed by Modernism in the 1930s. However, it is experiencing a resurgence today, incorporating new technology.

Some notable Arts and Crafts designers include: William Morris, Gustav Stickley, Frederic Goudy, and Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo.
