The confectioner Callard & Bowser, originally known for its luxurious sweets like butterscotch and nougat, was established in 1779 in Glasgow by Richard Callard and John Bowser. Their high-quality, British-style candies quickly earned a devoted following. Callard & Bowser’s signature butterscotch became particularly popular, and later, the brand became known for its licorice and creamy nougats, which many remember fondly as staples from their childhoods.

Over the years, the company changed hands several times. In 1953, Arthur Guinness & Sons acquired it, later selling it to Beatrice Foods in 1982. By 1988, United Biscuits purchased Callard & Bowser, and then Kraft took over in 1993. Eventually, it was acquired by Wrigley in 2004, which shifted the manufacturing of some products, like Altoids mints, to the U.S. Although Callard & Bowser's original toffees and nougats were discontinued in the early 2000s, the brand's influence lives on through Altoids, which retain the traditional packaging style that fans associate with its legacy.
