Vintage Carrs of Carlisle highly decorative biscuit tin showing colourful flowers. The design is made to look like enamelling.

Size: 24 cm wide 18 cm depth 5 cm tall.

The tin is in exceptional condition with some minor age related wear. It would be great for display or as a keepsake box sewing box etc

Carr's of Carlisle was founded in 1831 by Jonathan Dodgson Carr, a master baker in Cumberland, England. The company started as a small bakery and biscuit factory, and became one of the largest baking businesses in Britain within 15 years.

Carr's was the first firm to make fancy biscuits by machinery

Carr's was a mill and bakery, producing bread at night and biscuits by day

Carr's biscuits were loosely based on dry biscuits used by sailors on long voyages

Carr's was a champion of good causes, and was a leader in the campaign to repeal the Corn Laws

Later history

Carr's was registered as Carr and Co. Ltd. in 1894

Carr's was bought by Cavenham Foods in 1964

Carr's was acquired by United Biscuits in 1972

The Carr's branded products were marketed in the USA by the Kellogg Company

The factory today is known officially as McVities but still known locally as Carr's
