Vintage Enterprise Laundry Wellingborough Fibreboard Laundry Box c.1940s–1960s Industrial Storage Trunk

.

Product Description

A wonderfully evocative piece of British commercial history, this original Enterprise Laundry, Wellingborough fibreboard box is a charming survivor from the days when laundries collected, sorted and returned freshly cleaned garments and household linens in purpose-made delivery boxes. The printed instruction to “Please pack dry cleaning separately” leaves little doubt as to its original role, while the large painted number 127 adds to its authentic working character.

.

Made from dark fibreboard with riveted corner reinforcements and its original webbing strap, this is the sort of object that now feels both decorative and deeply nostalgic. It has all the honest wear you would hope to see in a true working piece: rubbed edges, scuffs, marks and losses to the surface finish, all of which speak beautifully of years of practical use. Comparable surviving laundry delivery boxes are typically described as fibreboard transport boxes used by laundries to move clothing between customer and laundromat, and examples of this type are commonly dated to the mid-20th century.

.

What makes this example especially appealing is its strong typography and local interest. Wellingborough pieces have a nice regional pull, and this box would sit perfectly in a utility room, vintage-inspired laundry, retail display, theatre set, or as a conversation-starting storage piece in an eclectic interior.

.

At 60cm wide, it is also a very usable size.

.

We love items like this because they were never made to be glamorous — only useful — and yet time has given them a graphic charm and quiet presence that modern storage rarely achieves.

.

Approximate Date

Mid-20th century, likely circa 1940s to 1960s. This is based on the construction, typography, and comparison with other surviving vintage laundry delivery boxes rather than a dated maker’s label.

    vintage objects on table

Great item, was a glass jar with contents, well packaged, with a fragile label attached, arrived no problems. A near perfect example of a 50s/60s Hopkin and Williams chemical bottle. The postage was fair, the item was as described and a good value, especially with contents.

    vintage clock face

I am absolutely delighted with this item. It arrived by post quicker than I expected. It was very well packaged up and I will add it to my ever growing collection..I spent quite a while deciding whether to add this [item] to it. it is exactly as you described.
