A wonderfully characterful original railway sign reading “Fogging Machines – Spalding No. 2”, hand-painted in pale lettering on a black-painted wooden board with its hanging tab still present.
This is a fascinating piece of railwayana, most likely relating to railway fog-signalling equipment. In traditional railway use, fog signals were detonators placed on the rail to warn drivers during poor visibility. Fogging machines allowed these detonators to be placed and managed more efficiently, making this a particularly interesting sign for collectors of signal-box, station and railway safety equipment.
The wording Spalding No. 2 gives the piece strong local interest, especially for collectors of Lincolnshire railway history and British railwayana.
This piece we believe comes from the Chris Aitken Collection, giving it added appeal for serious railwayana collectors. The sign has a beautifully aged surface, with scratches, rubbing, paint wear and working-life marks throughout. It has exactly the kind of authentic patina that makes old railway pieces so desirable.
With the Chris Aitken Collection provenance, more research required may increase its value
