Vintage English Silver Plated Revolving Butter Dish with Gilt Detail & Starburst Glass Liner

A beautifully decorative vintage English silver-plated revolving butter dish, complete with its removable pressed glass liner and elegant domed roll-top cover. Marked to the base “Silver Plated / Made in England”, this charming piece brings all the theatre of traditional dining to the table, with a wonderfully ornate late Victorian / Edwardian revival style.

The dish stands on four graceful cabriole-style legs and features a raised circular frame with a decorative beaded rim. The silver-plated body is enhanced with warm gilt detailing, including the beaded border, shell-shaped side pulls and raised floral scrollwork around the base. The contrast between the polished silver plate and the gilt highlights gives the piece a particularly attractive, formal tableware look.

At the centre sits a removable clear pressed glass liner with a starburst pattern to the base. This would originally have been used for butter, but it could also be displayed as a small caviar dish, preserve dish, condiment dish, trinket dish or decorative table centrepiece. The domed revolving cover rotates over the glass liner, helping to protect the contents while also giving the piece its wonderfully old-fashioned breakfast-table charm.

Although the design has the appearance of much earlier Victorian and Edwardian silver tableware, the mark and construction suggest a mid-20th-century vintage English silver-plated piece, likely dating from around the 1930s–1970s. It is a lovely example of traditional English silver-plated tableware made in a historic revival style.

The glass liner is in very good condition with no chips noted, which is a real advantage, as these removable glass inserts are often damaged or missing. The silver-plated frame shows light surface wear, tarnish, age-related marks, small scratches and spotting in places, all in keeping with vintage use. The gilt decoration is intentional and forms part of the original decorative finish, rather than being plate loss. The piece remains highly displayable and full of character.

A charming addition to a vintage dining table, afternoon tea setting, country house kitchen, dresser display or silver plate collection. Perfect for anyone who loves decorative English tableware, traditional breakfast pieces, or the little rituals of antique and vintage dining.
