Maker / brand history
Bonio is one of Britain’s best-known dog biscuit brands, with Purina noting that Bonio biscuits have been baked since 1932. The wider story links back to the great British dog-biscuit tradition begun by Spratt’s Patent Ltd, a pioneering pet-food firm associated with early commercial dog biscuits. Nestlé’s own corporate history records that Spillers purchased Spratts Patent Ltd in 1960, describing Spratts as the maker of Bonio, “the original bone-shaped biscuit.” Nestlé later bought Spillers Petfoods in 1998, integrating it into the Friskies group; Nestlé then acquired Ralston Purina in 2001. This makes the Friskies-branded Bonio tin most likely late 1990s to early 2000s, rather than an older mid-century tin.
Product description
A charming vintage Friskies Bonio dog biscuit storage tin, made in the instantly recognisable shape of a dog bone and finished in bright red with bold black-and-white Bonio branding to the lid. The sides are decorated with delightful illustrated dog scenes, including a basset hound enjoying his daily Bonio, with playful advertising slogans promoting Bonio as a treat for healthy teeth.
This is a wonderfully nostalgic piece of British pet-food advertising, ideal for collectors of vintage tins, dog-themed memorabilia, advertising collectables, or quirky kitchen and utility-room display pieces. The shaped form gives it real presence, while the bright red colour and Bonio branding make it instantly recognisable.
The tin shows clear signs of age and use, including surface scratches, scuffs, dark marks, rubbing to the decoration, wear around the lid rim, and tarnishing/rust spotting to the interior and base. These imperfections are part of its vintage character, but it is best sold as a decorative collectable tin rather than for direct food storage.
A fun and characterful display piece with strong nostalgic appeal — perfect for dog lovers, vintage advertising collectors, or as a playful prop in a country kitchen, boot room or shop display.
