Vintage Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society Tin Money Box Bank (Pre-Decimal)

A charming vintage tin savings bank issued by the Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society, established in 1850. These sturdy metal banks were originally given to customers to encourage regular saving — coins would be deposited at home and the bank returned to the branch to be opened with a special key.

.

This example is made from silver-tone metal with a red enamel top plate stamped:

“Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society – Estd 1850 – No. 2413”

.

The front of the tin features vertical coin windows marked for Six Pence and Nine Pence, confirming this is a pre-decimal British piece (pre-1971). The original slot apertures remain intact and the lock mechanism is present (key not visible in the photographs, so assume not included unless you have it).

.

Condition

Age-related wear, surface marks and light scuffing to the metal, giving it an appealing authentic vintage patina

Some loss of red enamel on the top plate

Lock present but untested

No structural damage or cracks

.

Overall, it displays beautifully as a nostalgic decorative object, perfect for collectors of British banking memorabilia, mid-century design lovers, or anyone with a soft spot for bygone saving habits.
