Vintage Mother-of-Pearl Shell Bowl with Spoon – Natural Nacre Condiment Trinket Dish

A beautifully decorative vintage mother-of-pearl shell bowl with matching shell spoon, full of soft natural iridescence and coastal charm.

This is a lovely little table piece, with the bowl formed from polished shell showing the natural nacre surface in shimmering tones of silver, pearl, blush pink, green and blue. The outer edge retains a darker shell border, giving it a striking contrast and a very organic, sculptural quality.

The bowl measures approximately 18cm tip to tip, 10cm wide tip to tip, and 4cm deep, making it a neat and elegant size for table service, dressing-table display, or decorative use. It is small enough to sit beautifully on a tray, sideboard, bathroom shelf or vanity table, while still being large enough to hold small items or condiments.

The accompanying spoon has what appears to be a mother-of-pearl shell bowl, with the same delicate iridescent lustre. The handle is a dark early plastic or resin, possibly Bakelite, though this has not been tested. It is finished with three pale circular shell-like inlay details, which give the spoon a refined decorative look and tie it beautifully to the shell bowl.

Pieces like this were popular as stylish table accessories during the mid-20th century, especially for serving small delicacies and condiments. Mother-of-pearl and nacre have long been associated with elegant dining, particularly seafood, caviar and preserve service, because shell spoons were traditionally favoured for foods where metal might affect flavour. This piece could have been used for caviar, salt, sugar, chutney, relish, pickles, olives, cocktail onions, nuts or small sweets. Today, it works just as well as a decorative trinket dish for rings, earrings, keys, crystals or dressing-table treasures.

There is a lovely natural history quality to the piece too. Mother-of-pearl, also known as nacre, is the iridescent inner layer formed by certain molluscs. Its appeal lies in the way it catches the light, shifting from cool pearl and silver to flashes of pink, green and blue depending on the angle. No two natural shell pieces are quite the same, which gives this bowl its individual character.

This would suit a collector of shell craft, vintage tableware, coastal interiors, bohemian décor, natural curiosities or decorative vanity pieces. It would also make a beautiful prop for styling jewellery, perfume bottles, bathroom accessories, seafood dining, or a vintage drinks and hors d’oeuvres setting.

Condition

In good vintage condition with natural variations to the shell, light surface wear and age-related marks consistent with use and handling. The shell has attractive iridescence throughout. The spoon appears complete, with the shell bowl fixed to the dark handle by a small metal fixing. The handle may be Bakelite or another early plastic/resin, but this has not been tested, so it is described cautiously.
