Description

A characterful vintage green glass beer bottle embossed for R. C. Allen Ltd, Leicester, a local Leicester bottling and brewing name with strong links to the city’s historic drinks trade.

The bottle is made in dark olive-green glass with a rounded shoulder, narrow neck and thick rounded lip. Around the body is raised embossed lettering reading R. C. Allen Ltd Leicester, with “Record” also visible, making this a lovely piece of regional brewery advertising and social history. The base also carries raised lettering and mould marks, adding to its collector appeal.

R. C. Allen Ltd was established as a limited company in 1898, reportedly as a joint venture connected with several Leicester breweries, including Everards, Leicester Brewing & Malting and Welch Brothers. The company bottled beer and mineral waters, and its Charnwood Street/Leicester bottling premises later became part of the city’s industrial landscape. The business continued after R. C. Allen’s death in 1918 and was taken over by Praeds in 1951.

This example has a pleasing aged surface with bubbles, wear, internal clouding/residue and small marks from use, all consistent with an old returnable brewery bottle. It displays beautifully as kitchenalia, bar décor, brewery memorabilia or as part of a vintage bottle collection.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related wear. There are surface scratches, marks, internal residue/clouding and signs of use, as shown in the photographs. No obvious major breakage visible from the images. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.

Why we love it

This is exactly the sort of object that tells a local story without making a fuss about it. A simple green bottle, yes — but also a surviving little fragment of Leicester’s brewing and bottling history. Wonderful for a collector, a pub display, or someone who loves regional advertising pieces.
