Antique Edwardian Hand-Painted Floral Table Crumb Brush c.1900

A beautifully decorative antique Edwardian table crumb brush, dating to around c.1900–1915, with a charming curved form, black lacquered or japanned finish, gilt-style detailing and hand-painted floral decoration.

This elegant dining accessory would once have been used to sweep crumbs from a tablecloth after or between courses, usually alongside a matching crumb tray or pan. Known as a butler’s crumb brush, table crumber or crumb sweeper, pieces such as this were part of the refined domestic rituals of late Victorian and Edwardian dining, when table presentation and household order were highly valued.

The brush has a wonderfully sculptural curved shape, almost crescent-like in profile, with a painted black ground decorated with bright flowers, green foliage and delicate gilt scrollwork. The natural bristles remain present and give the piece a lovely period texture. The floral decoration has a soft, timeworn quality, making this a very attractive display piece for collectors of antique kitchenalia, country house dining accessories, Victorian household items and decorative tableware.

There is visible age-related wear throughout, including rubbing, surface marks, losses to the painted decoration and wear to the edges, all consistent with age and previous use. The original matching crumb tray is not present, so this is being sold as a single brush. Despite this, it remains a highly decorative and evocative antique item with plenty of charm.

A lovely piece of social history, perfect for styling in a vintage kitchen, dining room, dresser display, country house interior or antique kitchenalia collection.

Why We Love It

This is a wonderfully atmospheric little piece of domestic history. The elegant curved shape, dark japanned finish and hand-painted flowers make it far more than a simple household brush. It speaks of formal dining rooms, crisp table linen, polished sideboards and the quiet rituals of Edwardian home life. Even without its original tray, it makes a beautiful decorative object.
