Huntley & Palmers was a major British biscuit manufacturer founded in Reading in 1822 by Joseph Huntley, which grew to become the world's largest biscuit producer by 1900. The company's success was built on innovation, including the development of machine-made biscuits, the use of tin packaging to protect them during transport, and a global marketing strategy. Production in Reading ended in 1976, but the company's extensive archive is housed at the University of Reading, and the history is preserved by Reading Museum.

Key Historical Points

Founding (1822): Joseph Huntley established a small bakery on London Street in Reading.

Partnership with Palmer (1841): His son Thomas Huntley partnered with George Palmer, a fellow Quaker, and the firm was renamed Huntley & Palmer.

Factory Expansion: In 1846, a large factory opened on Kings Road to accommodate growing production.

Global Growth: Under George Palmer, the business transformed, with a global reach and the world's first continuously running machine for making biscuits.

Innovations: The company developed machine-made biscuits and was a pioneer in using metal tins for packaging, which led to another firm, Huntley, Boorne & Stevens, that specialized in tin manufacturing.

World's Largest Manufacturer: By 1900, Huntley & Palmers was the largest biscuit company in the world, employing over 5,000 people and selling its products in 172 countries.
